This tour begins with a pickup from the bus terminal in Ancud on the emerald island of Chiloé Grande. This area is steeped in history and was where the Spaniards made their last stand in all of the Americas when the colonies were liberated. After a visit to a café for a kuchen (german style cake) overlooking the bay and an historical discussion, we will depart into the Chilote countryside towards the rugged Pacific Coast of the island. An area of deserted beaches, quiet farmlands and coastal forests, the rarely visited West coast is a hidden jewel of natural beauty and wildlife. Our destination will be the unique penguin colony of Puñihuíl, the only place in the world where Humbolt and Magallanic penguins nest side by side. We will tour the small island colonies by boat, a trip that often encounters many other types of marine life. After a gourmet picnic lunch of smoked salmon, we will spend the afternoon exploring the rugged beauty of the hidden beaches and countryside of the West coast. Activities are to be determined by your interests (from sight seeing to active). In the evening we'll return to Ancud for the night where we'll check in to a nice hostal with its tranquil views overlooking the bay. (private transport, guide, lunch, activities, and double with bath accommodation included). |

After a continental breakfast at your hostal, you and your guide will drive south on the paved highway toward the bustling port city of Dalcahue, a picturesque fishing town and home of one of the 14 UNESCO World Heritage Site Churches on the island. After a short visit we will leave the pavement and enter rural Chiloé along the coastal road. This is where traditional culture thrives, with oxen pulling carts laden with firewood, milk jugs awaiting pickup every morning and afternoon and life revolves around the rhythm of country life. Small fishing communities nestled along the coast surrounded by thriving agricultural lands create an ambiance of peace and tranquility. We'll be heading for the coastal village of Tenaun, also the home of a UNESCO church. This special village has a privileged location with stunning views over the outer islands of the Chiloé Archipelago and the snow-capped mountains in the distance. Night will be spent in Tenaún at the home of a friendly local family along the ocean. If you are interested, you can visit their potato & vegetable gardens or visit a unique 40-meter waterfall nestled in the forest nearby. If not, just relax and stroll along the beach watching the small fishing boats come in to anchor or the multiple species of sea birds. A quiet night's sleep is guaranteed. (private transport, guide, all meals, activities and lodging included, note* doubles with shared bath due to the antiquity of the farmhouse.) |

After breakfast we'll continue up the coastal road to the lovely fishing community of Quemchi, with countless boats at anchor or resting upon the sands of the beach. We'll then make our way back to Ancud where there are frequent buses back to the mainland. |
